Facts about Cypress
Located in the northwestern area of Orange County, Cypress is home to more than 50,000 people. As is true with a number of cities in Orange County, the area remained unincorporated for a number of years. It was only incorporated in 1956. Prior to the incorporation effort, the area was often referred to as Waterville, owing to the number of artesian wells found nearby.
The incorporation came about as a way to squelch the efforts of developers to alter the community. At the time of the 1956 incorporation, the name of Dairy City was used. The name was in recognition of the number of dairy farms within the community.
By 1957, residents voted to change the name of the city to Cypress. The name was derived directly from a local elementary school, which in turn had derived its name from the presence of cypress trees that had been planted to protect the school from wind damage.
Today, Cypress is the headquarters for Real Mex Restaurants. The top five employers within the city are UnitedHealth Group, Siemens, Cypress College, Hybrid Promotions, and C&D Zodiac. While named for a nearby city, the Los Alamitos Race Course is located within the Cypress city limits.
