The plan for a new community in Orange County gained traction in 1976, At that time, the Mission Viejo Company acquired the acreage needed for the project. By 1979, the county had provided approval, and the first homes were offered for sale in 1982. The first sale took place before the year was out. The name of Aliso Viejo means "old sycamore" in Spanish, and was felt to be appropriate for the area.
Over the years, a number of companies have chosen to make Aliso Viejo the home for their corporate headquarters. A few of the businesses with a presence in the city include insurance company Pacific Life, restaurant chain Marie Callender's, vodka company Ketel One, and online retailer Buy.com.
