Facts about Costa Mesa
Located in Orange County, Costa Mesa is currently home to more than 112,000 people. While the city's history traces back to the latter 19th century, it was not incorporated until 1953. Originally more of a farming community, Costa Mesa today has a robust economy based on commerce, some manufacturing, and a heavy retail presence.
The city is on the site of a community that was once known as Harper. By 1920, the community had prospered both in wealth and in the number of people living there, with farming being the foundation for the growth. During that same year, the decision was made to change the name of the community to Costa Mesa. In Spanish, the name translates to "table coast".
Much of Costa Mesa's population growth in the post-World War II era is attributed to the Santa Ana Army Air Base. A number of military personnel who trained there chose to make the community their home after completing their hitches. The rapid growth also brought in more businesses, and a demand for more residential housing. Today, the city is known as the site of the two tallest skyscrapers in Orange County.
