Facts about Brea
Found 33 miles southeast of Los Angeles, Brea is home to more than 47,500 people. The name for the city is Spanish, and means "tar". Brea is considered to be part of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area for census and other purposes.
The city's origins are traced back to 1894, when the Union Oil Company of California purchased 1,200 acres from Abel Stearns. The purpose was to tap into oil reserves recently discovered in the area. Within a few years, a number of drilling towers were operating on the property. The two villages that developed nearby, Olinda and Randolph, gained in population as the oil boom continued. Eventually those two villages united to become a single community. This was made official when the new town incorporated on January 19, 1911, adopting the name of Brea.
As the oil boom died down, agriculture began to become more important to the community economy. Specifically, orange and lemon groves became prominent. The advent of the Orange Freeway led to more population growth, bringing along with it a number of restaurants and other businesses. Today, Brea is considered to be one of the top five suburbs in the United States.
